Absolute Value Property

This property relates the absolute value of an integral to the integral of the absolute value.

If $f(x)$ is continuous on $[a,b]$, then

$\left|\int_a^b f(x) \, dx\right| \le \int_a^b |f(x)| \, dx$

应用例子

Estimate $\left|\int_0^1 \sin(\pi x) dx\right|$.

• Since $|\sin(\pi x)|\le 1$ on $[0,1]$, the RHS $\le 1$.
• Actually $\int_0^1 \sin(\pi x) dx = \tfrac{2}{\pi} \approx 0.637$.
